Maps and Transportation

The Osa is the Southernmost Peninsula in Costa Rica. It is bordered on the east by the
pristine Golfo Dulce and the west by the Pacific Ocean. The Osa Peninsula is more remote
and less developed than any other part of Costa Rica, and is known as the country's wildest
and most spectacular region. Tourists are beginning to discover this little known lush-tropical
paradise of unparalleled wildlife, miles of deserted beaches, and primary rain forests.
The Osa Peninsula is absolutely Costa Rica's best kept secret!!
Below are some tips to follow to make your journey easier, safer, and more enjoyable!

There are two domestic airlines in Costa Rica. Nature Air  and Sansa Airlines both depart from
Juan Santamaria International Airport. The flight to Puerto Jimenez is only 45 minutes!
(The pictures on the Nature Air website of Agua Dulce are 3 years old, pay no attention)

During High Season to avoid an overnight stay in San Jose, plan to arrive on your International flight
before 1:00pm to ensure departure on a local flight the same day to Puerto Jimenez.
During our Low Season you will need to arrive early morning.
If you prefer, or need to spend a night in San Jose we will be happy to recommend accommodations.

We also can arrange for a driver to meet you at the international airport and transfer you to your hotel
or your flight the following day. You will be met at the passenger exit gate with your name on a sign.
Please give us your airline, flight number, and arrival information when you make your reservation.

Avoid traveling at night. Nothing is well lit or well marked. Your best option is to have a GPS.
The main roads are paved and in good condition. Actually, you will find that the roads are "generally"
paved from San Jose all the way to Puerto Jimenez! The roads are sometimes narrow and there are
stretches that can often be full of ruts and potholes, so caution is advised.

You can drive a Toyota Corolla to our front door!! However...if you want to get off the main roads,
steep inclines / declines, muddy conditions, creek and river crossings are normal on the Osa.
A 4-wheel drive vehicle will make your trip more enjoyable, and is highly recommended if you
want to get out and explore on your own. You will see our signs once you arrive on the Osa!

Shuttle service is a shared transportation option in an air-conditioned minibus (or coaster)
between popular destinations. Shuttle routes sometimes operate daily in the high season, and in some
cases there are multiple departure times throughout the day. They are subject to availability and must
be reserved in advance. Leave the driving to someone else...The ride is beautiful and cost reasonable.

The most time consuming and uncomfortable way to arrive to Puerto Jimenez, but it's cheap!!
Sometimes there is Air Conditioning on the bus, sometimes not. Oftentimes conditions
are very crowded, and other travelers with questionable hygiene etiquette...are the norm.
Obviously, this transportation option is
not recommended for our guests.
Once you arrive in Puerto Jimenez, Taxi's are readily available in town. The fare is $10 to Agua Dulce.
From San Jose you can catch the daily public bus that departs from downtown San Jose at Transportes
Blanco, at 8:00am and 12:00pm. Departing from Puerto Jimenez to San Jose at 5:00am and 9:00am.
Telephone: 2- 257-4121. It is approximately an 8 hour ride, and it is not unusual to arrive late.

This is a passenger only boat. There is no car ferry. Boats (launchas) leave every couple hours beginning
in the morning with the last boat leaving Golfito at approximately 3:30pm.
All boats leave from the public pier, inquire directly with the captains about departure times.

If you are considering renting a vehicle, Please Read Carefully...

Costa Rica has many rental car companies such as Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Mapache, etc...
None of these companies has an office here in Puerto Jimenez.
If you have problems or an issue with your vehicle while in Puerto Jimenez or traveling the Osa
Peninsula it can be very difficult, time consuming, and costly to resolve.
Don't take the risk of traveling to the Osa Peninsula and having car problems...this is your vacation!!

If you are going to rent a vehicle, do so from an agency that actually has an office here in
Puerto Jimenez. All of these agencies
also have offices throughout Costa Rica, so anywhere you
travel you will be certain that
if you do have a problem, there will be someone close by to help.

Solid Rental Car is Solid! This company has had an office and cars here for over 5 years. Their
reputation, vehicles, and service are as the name says...Solid! This company also gives back in many
ways to our community and we are proud to support them

There are two new agencies in town this year. Without time to evaluate their service records
or receive any feedback from our guests, I think their names speak for themselves...
